Fundamentals

As you get started with Nest, it’s helpful to think about two key features: exercises and runs.

Exercises

An exercise is the simulation of an event through a sequence of injects that get sent out to various roles over time.

Injects are informational or instructional messages sent during the exercise. These are often packaged in real-world formats such as emails, telephone calls, or news articles.

Roles are categories of people that are being evaluated within the exercise. These will vary depending on the context and goals of your exercise. For an airport training exercise these could include air traffic controllers, emergency responders, and port managers.

Runs

A run is a playthrough of an exercise. Those being evaluated join as participants, with each assigned one or many roles to play within the exercise.

Each participant experiences the exercise from a unique perspective, only receiving injects sent to their assigned roles.
